Case Study

YWCA Darwin – Women of Worth

YWCA Darwin was established in 1969 to provide safe and affordable accommodation services for young women arriving in the city for work. They are a social justice organisation committed to ensuring the rights and needs of women and girls are recognised and realised, including rights to equal social and economic participation, as well as concerns relating specifically to the context of women in the Northern Territory. Since their first accommodation centre was opened in 1974, YWCA Darwin has significantly expanded the range of services they provide for women and girls, as well as other community groups in need.

In 2016 TFFF contributed $466,000 for the final year of a two year commitment to YWCA of Darwin’s Women of Worth pilot program at the Darwin Correctional Centre.

Women of Worth (the Program) has been running since August 2015 and assists women incarcerated at Darwin Correctional Centre, supervised by Community Corrections and released prisoners. The program supports women aged 18 years and over who are in the care of the Justice System, providing six months pre-and post-release support.

The overall aims of the program are to provide these women with practical support to stabilise and improve their life circumstances and, as a result, reduce recidivism rates. YWCA Darwin supports these women to successfully transition back into their communities and families and provides them with alternatives to custody, wherever possible and practical. The program also aims to improve employment opportunities and parenting skills in order to break the cycle of disadvantage. It seeks to mentor women to become aspirational role models within their communities and to their children.

Women of Worth Program staff provide a range of psychosocial education and accredited training programs to women incarcerated at Darwin Correctional Centre two days per week. 66% of women involved in the program are aged between 21 and 40 years of age, and 77% of women identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

To date the Program has demonstrated great success in assisting clients with regaining custody of their children, obtaining long-term housing, accessing employment and education and reducing recidivism rates. Since its commencement Women of Worth staff delivered 215 group sessions to 47 women referred to the program and, significantly, less than 10% of clients have reoffended.
