Garma Festival Cultural Immersion Project 2009
Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts—$27,000 for 2009 Cultural Immersion

The Garma Festival is held in north east Arnhem Land and is one of Australia's most significant Indigenous festivals. Held in July each year, it is the largest and most vibrant celebration of Yolngu culture in recent memory and attracts many clan groups from north east Arnhem Land, and representatives from neighbouring Indigenous peoples throughout Arnhem Land and the Northern Territory. The Festival is designed to share knowledge and culture, encourage the practice, preservation and maintenance of traditional dance, song, art and ceremony. In 2009, the key forum of the Festival was Creative Industries, with discussions regarding training, artistic development and practice, traditional art and the extent and nature of the Creative Industries interface with Indigenous Australians, all topics directly relevant to ACPA, as a training institution for Indigenous performing artists. ACPA’s aim in taking students and staff to Garma in 2009 was to facilitate a cultural immersion experience which would also provide educational and potential vocational opportunities.
