A Spotlight On…

Youth Insearch

Bundaberg Support Group. Photo Youth Insearch.

Youth Insearch Foundation supports at-risk young people in rural and urban Australia, aged 14-20, that otherwise fall between the cracks. Its evidence-based early intervention program addresses disadvantaged youths’ underlying mental and social challenges to reconnect them with services and society. The Youth Insearch model ensures each young person can embark on a program of change while remaining within their own home and school environment.

Since 1985, Youth Insearch has delivered peer-support programs designed by young people, for young people. To date, it has directly helped 32,000 young people from Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. The Australian Families Institute research found that 80% of Youth Insearch participants make positive changes in their lives.

TFFF funding over three years supports Youth Insearch Foundation to deliver the Entrenching Change initiative to empower at-risk young Queenslanders to take control of their lives by giving them the opportunity and skills to develop their self-esteem (by resolving their issues) and play a positive role in their communities (and their own lives). The program aims to:

  • Address feelings of helplessness and suffering
  • Establish a connection between school attendance, good education and employment prospects
  • Reduce the incidence of underage substance abuse, violence, crime, and suicide, and
  • Stop the cycle of family breakdown by equipping participants with some essential parenting skills.

To achieve these objectives in Queensland, Youth Insearch is expanding its community presence through employment of new youth support workers in regions over three years:

  • Year 1 – Bundaberg, Dalby, and Tara/Chinchilla
  • Year 2 – Hervey Bay and Roma (commencing July 2021)
  • Year 3 – Miles and Maryborough (commencing July 2022)

Social Worker Adam Klimkiewicz facilitates the Bundaberg Support Group at headspace Bundaberg, affectionately referred to as the Bundy Youth Insearchers. Support Groups enable peers to share, listen, and support and encourage each other, and as Adam says, “with awesomeness and openness!”

Social Worker Khushboo Shah runs the Dalby Support Group each week, engaging students in games that facilitate conversations through which participants share experiences and strategies to find better ways of communicating.

Youth Insearch Leader and former Participant in Queensland, Samantha Clayton, talks about the impact of the program:

“I see the impact Youth Insearch has on people. I see the impact that it had in my own life, and I see the benefits because of the change that I made at that age. I know what positive roads these young people can take if they choose to take them.

“And it’s not just the young person that it affects; it affects so many people. My whole family was being impacted by my negative choices. Now, my family, all have positive impacts from me being a more positive person in society. I see the positive impact I can have in the community, rather than me taking from the community. So, I think it has this ripple effect.”

A word from Client Supervisor Psychologist, Kathy Morrison…

“Youth Insearch is different. It provides a really, really safe environment. There are strong parameters around confidentiality and relationships, where people are respected, everybody’s got an opinion, and everybody’s listened to… for some young people, it’s the first time in their life that anybody’s actually listened to them. And that’s a powerful thing.”
